The Garfagnana valley lies between the Apuan Alps and the Appennine mountains in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. Famous for its medieval towns, walking trails, and particularly for its traditional way of life, you often feel you have gone back in time in this gorgeous and relatively undiscovered part of Tuscany. Chestnut forests cover the lower slopes of the Appenines as they rise to peaks of 2,000 metres, and the beech forests high up offer spectacular tracks and views over the Apuan Alps. Prunecchio is set at 800 metres and is connected to the towns of Pieve Fosciana, Castiglione, Chiozza and Sillico by a series of ancient tracks through the forests, which take in medieval bridges, water mills and chestnut drying houses, giving testament to the reliance on chestnuts as a means of survival even in the not-too-distant past.
The chestnut and the porcini mushroom find their way into many of the primi piatti which has made the region famous in the gastronomic world, and the zuppa di farro is a must. At Prunecchio you will sample these delicacies at least once, as well as enjoying the international bill of fare proposed by our international travellers.
